Hotel rooms in Mykonos in July are $400 a night for a basic double. The Maldives is $1,200+ for a water villa. Tuscany’s been $300 baseline for years. For a family of 4, the famous travel destinations have priced themselves out of the family-vacation market.
The fix isn’t roughing it. It’s swapping the famous destination for its lesser-known neighbor that has the same coast, same mountains, same food culture — at mid-tier 4-star prices.
Here are six pairs we’d send a friend to instead. Real prices for a family of 4 in May 2026.
The six swaps
1. Albania instead of the Greek islands — 50-60% cheaper
| Greek Islands (Mykonos / Santorini) | Albania (Sarande / Ksamil) | |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-tier family hotel | $250–400/night | $80–150/night |
| Sea-view restaurant dinner for 4 | $120 | $50 |
| 7-day total family-of-4 (incl. flights) | $9,000–13,000 | $3,800–5,200 |
Same Adriatic water. Same blue-and-white coastal villages. The Ksamil islets are 80 kilometers north of Corfu’s beaches. Albania has worse marketing and the same scenery. Full Albania 7-day plan.

2. Georgia (Caucasus) instead of Switzerland — 70% cheaper
| Switzerland (Zermatt / Interlaken) | Georgia (Tbilisi / Kazbegi) | |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-tier family hotel | $300–500/night | $80–140/night |
| Mountain restaurant | $90/person | $25/person |
| Wine tasting for adults | $80 | $20 |
| 10-day family-of-4 (incl. flights) | $11,000–16,000 | $5,800–8,500 |
Switzerland’s mountains are spectacular. So are Georgia’s. The Caucasus has Soviet-era infrastructure (good roads, marshrutka minivans) and modern boutique hotels. Tbilisi’s old town is one of the most underrated city walks in Europe. The wine is older than France’s (Georgians have been making it for 8,000 years).

3. Morocco (north) instead of Mykonos / Santorini — 60% cheaper
| Mykonos / Santorini | Marrakech + Chefchaouen | |
|---|---|---|
| Riad/hotel family room | $250–400 | $80–180 |
| Souk dinner for 4 | $80 | $35 |
| 10-day family of 4 | $9,500–14,000 | $5,200–7,500 |
Different vibe (souks vs. Greek tavernas), same value-for-experience math. The blue-and-white Greek-island aesthetic has a Moroccan equivalent: Chefchaouen, the blue city of Morocco’s Rif mountains. The famous boutique riads (Marrakech, Fes) are $80–180/night for family suites with rooftop pools.

4. Vietnam (north) instead of Thailand (Phuket area) — 40-50% cheaper
| Phuket (Thailand) | Hanoi + Ha Long Bay | |
|---|---|---|
| Beach resort room | $200–350 | $90–180 |
| Restaurant meal for 4 | $60 | $25 |
| 7-day family of 4 | $7,500–10,500 | $4,500–6,000 |
Phuket has been pricing for European package tourists since 2010. Northern Vietnam (Hanoi + Ha Long Bay + Hoi An) has 90% of the Southeast Asia appeal at half the price. The Ha Long Bay overnight cruise is the experience your kids will talk about for years.

5. Bali (Ubud / Amed) instead of the Maldives — 70% cheaper
| Maldives | Bali (Ubud + Sanur) | |
|---|---|---|
| Family villa with pool | $1,200/night | $120–250/night |
| Dinner | $200/person | $25/person |
| Activities | $300/family/day | $80/family/day |
| 10-day family of 4 | $20,000+ | $6,800–10,000 |
The Maldives is incredible. The Maldives is also $1,200/night minimum, every night. For families with two kids, a Bali villa with a private pool gives 80% of the Maldives experience at 15% of the cost. Plus you actually have stuff to do beyond the resort fence — temples, cooking classes, rice terraces.

6. Colombia (Salento + Medellin) instead of Tuscany — 50% cheaper
| Tuscany | Salento + Medellin (Colombia) | |
|---|---|---|
| Boutique countryside hotel | $250–450 | $80–150 |
| Wine + food tour for 2 | $200 | $80 |
| 10-day family of 4 | $9,000–14,000 | $5,800–8,200 |
Wax palms, coffee farms, cobblestone villages, food culture, friendly people. Salento is Tuscany 30 years ago. Medellin is the city base — boutique hotels in the El Poblado neighborhood from $90/night. Cartagena’s old town for the last 3 days for a UNESCO Caribbean colonial experience.
Book stays: Salento hotels on Booking.
What this looks like for a family of 4
| Trip length | The famous destination | The half-the-price swap |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days | $9,000–13,000 | $3,500–6,500 |
| 10 days | $11,000–16,000 | $5,500–8,500 |
| 14 days | $14,000–20,000 | $7,000–11,500 |
Same comfort tier (mid-tier 4-star). Different latitude. Different stamp in the passport.
What “half the price” actually means in our math
It’s the obvious comparison, not the cheapest possible. We’re comparing mid-tier 4-star to mid-tier 4-star. Not Albania backpacker hostel vs Mykonos luxury resort.
The math is:
- Hotel: family room at 4-star or equivalent
- Food: three meals out a day at mid-tier restaurants
- Local transport: rental car or hired driver
- One paid activity per day
Same items, half the price. The cuisine is different, the architecture is different. The vacation feel is similar.
