We’ve taken our family of 4 to both. Maldives is unforgettable. Maldives is also $20,000+ for 7 days. Bali delivers ~80% of the tropical-family-paradise experience for ~35% of the cost. Here’s the honest comparison.
30-second comparison

| Comfort tier 4-star vs equivalent | Resort-isolated | Villa with cultural surrounds |
Where Maldives genuinely wins
Honest accounting:
- The water and snorkeling. Maldivian water clarity and reef quality is unmatched. If your family is into diving/snorkeling and that’s the trip purpose, Maldives wins.
- The water-villa experience. Stepping into your private overwater villa, swimming directly from your deck, is iconic. Bali has nothing exactly equivalent.
- Zero light pollution. Maldivian night skies are spectacular.
- The “all-inclusive of-nothing-to-do” relaxation. If you want zero choices for 7 days — eat, swim, repeat — Maldives delivers.
For a family of 4 with infinite budget and a snorkel obsession, Maldives is the right answer. This article is for everyone else.
Where Bali wins
For ~$13,000 less:
- You actually have stuff to do. Rice terraces, monkey forest, holy water temples, cooking classes, art markets. Things to do in Ubud →
- Cultural depth. Balinese Hindu temples, traditional dance performances, daily offerings on every doorstep — your kids learn something instead of just sitting on a deck.
- Restaurant variety. Maldives = your resort’s 2-3 restaurants. Bali = hundreds of options at every price point.
- Half the price for a private-pool villa. A Bali villa in Sayan/Penestanan with private pool + rice-paddy view is $120-200/night vs Maldives water villa $1,200+.
- You can split coast + culture. Spend 5 days in Ubud (jungle, temples, terraces), 5 days in Sanur (beach). One trip, two experiences.
What you actually do in each
Maldives (5-day family)
- Day 1: Arrive, transfer by speedboat or seaplane ($300-600 family), check into water villa
- Day 2-4: Beach, pool, snorkel from your villa deck, two house-reef snorkel trips, family swim with stingrays excursion ($400)
- Day 5: Transfer back to Male, fly out
The whole trip is contained within your resort.
Bali (10-day family — our full plan here)
- Days 1-2: Arrive Denpasar, drive to Ubud (1.5 hr), private-pool villa
- Day 3: Tegalalang rice terrace + swing, Sacred Monkey Forest
- Day 4: Tirta Empul holy springs, cooking class
- Day 5: Tegenungan Waterfall, Ubud Art Market
- Day 6: Drive to Sanur (1.5 hr), beach hotel
- Day 7-8: Beach days, kid-friendly Nusa Lembongan day trip ($60/family)
- Day 9: Sunset Tanah Lot temple
- Day 10: Fly out
Twice the trip duration. Two completely different experiences in one vacation.

Booking platforms
Bali villas: Booking.com — Ubud + private pool for the rice-paddy stays; Booking.com — Sanur for beach.
Bali tours and Ha Long Bay etc: Klook is cheaper than booking direct for most Bali day trips.
Maldives: Direct booking on resort website is typically the only path; aggregator pricing is similar. Stress-test the seaplane transfer cost — it’s not always in the headline rate.
Travel insurance for either: SafetyWing Nomad Family — $160-260/month covers any length trip.
