The best time to visit the Maldives
The best time to visit the Maldives is December to March, when the dry northeast monsoon brings the most sunshine and calm, clear water. November to April is the wider dry season. May to October is wetter and windier but cheaper and quieter, and it is the surf season. Wildlife such as manta rays and whale sharks depends on the atoll and month.
Season by season
- 1
November to April: dry season
From November to April the northeast monsoon brings the driest weather, the most sunshine and the calmest seas, which is the best window for beach holidays, snorkelling and diving. Visibility on the reef is usually at its best. It is also the peak tourist season, so resorts are more expensive and fill up well ahead, especially around Christmas and New Year. If you want this weather at a lower price, aim for November or April, the edges of the season.

May to October: wet season
From May to October the southwest monsoon brings more cloud, wind and rain, usually as short tropical showers rather than all-day downpours. Many days still have long spells of sun. This is the low season, so resort rates are noticeably lower and the islands are quieter, which suits travellers who care more about value than guaranteed weather. Seas can be rougher, and some water sports and excursions are cancelled on windy days. Bring a rain jacket and flexible plans.

Surf season from May to September
The main surf season falls in the wetter months, when swells from the southern Indian Ocean reach the atolls. The famous breaks are around the North and South Malé atolls, and surf camps and resorts organise boat trips to them. Beginners and families will find calmer conditions in the dry season, while experienced surfers prefer the bigger waves of the wet months. If you plan to surf, book the surf resort early, as the best places have limited numbers of guests per break.

Manta and whale shark timing
Wildlife depends on where you stay and when. Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll is known for large gatherings of manta rays, usually in the wetter months when plankton is abundant, and it is a protected area with limits on visitors. South Ari Atoll has whale sharks through much of the year. Ask the resort which atoll and which months suit the animals you want to see, rather than assuming. Always snorkel with an operator that follows the rules and keeps a respectful distance.

Best overall: December to March
If you only want one answer, choose December to March. Rain is least likely, the sun is strongest and the water is at its flattest, which is ideal for swimming, snorkelling and children. Book early, because the best resorts sell out months ahead and prices peak at Christmas and New Year. If you can be flexible, early December, late January and early March offer the same weather with fewer people. Even in the best season, bring reef-safe sunscreen and a hat.
Plan it
- Best time
- December to March is the best overall for sun and flat water. November and April are good shoulder months. May to October is wetter and cheaper, and the surf season.
- How long
- Five to seven nights is a typical length, long enough to relax and snorkel. Shorter stays are possible but make the long flight less worthwhile.
- Getting around
- You arrive at Velana International Airport near Malé, then reach your resort by speedboat, seaplane or a short domestic flight. Local islands are linked by public ferry. Resorts usually arrange the transfer.
Good to know
- Ask the resort how long and how costly the transfer is before booking. Seaplanes only fly in daylight, and late arrivals may need an overnight in Malé.
- Choose a resort with a house reef if you want to snorkel from the beach without a boat.
- Local islands are cheaper than private resort islands and let you see daily life, though alcohol and swimwear rules differ.
