The Algarve: Greek-island beaches at lower prices
The Algarve gives families Greek-island style beaches on Portugal's south coast at noticeably lower prices than the islands in summer. The cliffs, coves and sea caves around Lagos and Carvoeiro are the best known, the east near Tavira has calmer water, and the west coast has surf. The Atlantic is cooler than the Aegean, so expect refreshing swims rather than bath-warm ones.
How they compare
- 1
Sea cliffs and coves near Lagos and Carvoeiro
The coast between Lagos and Carvoeiro is the Algarve most people picture: golden limestone cliffs, rock stacks standing in the water, and small sandy coves reached by steps. Praia da Marinha is one of the best known, and many of the coves are good for snorkelling in calm weather. The stairs down can be steep with small children, so check the access before you set off. Go in the morning, when the light is soft and parking is easier.
- 2
Long red cliffs at Praia da Falésia
Praia da Falésia is a very long beach backed by red and ochre cliffs, close to Vilamoura and Olhos de Água. Its length is the point: even in July there is space to spread out, and the sand is wide and firm. Beach cafes sit at several access points, so you can choose between a busy end and a quiet stretch. The cliffs are fragile and can fall, so sit well back from their base rather than in their shade.
- 3
The calm east around Tavira
East of Faro the Algarve is flatter and quieter, with warmer, shallower water behind a chain of barrier islands. Tavira is the town to base in: a river, a Roman bridge and small squares. Boats and a ferry run from town to Ilha de Tavira, a long sandy strip with shallow water that suits young children well. The lagoon behind it, Ria Formosa, is a nature reserve for birds. It is cheaper and calmer than the central coast.

Surf beaches on the west coast
The west coast, facing the open Atlantic, is a different place: bigger waves, cooler water and wider, wilder beaches. Praia do Amado and Arrifana, near Aljezur, are the usual surf stops, with schools that run lessons for older children and teenagers. The water is too cold and rough for relaxed paddling in most weeks, so treat these as a day trip rather than a base. Check flags and the sea state before letting anyone swim.
- 5
Fresh fish at local prices
Fish is one of the best parts of the Algarve for families. Grilled sardines in summer, sea bream or sea bass grilled whole, and cataplana, a seafood stew cooked in a copper pan, are all common on menus. Simple cafes away from the beachfronts charge far less than waterfront terraces, and the daily dish at lunch is usually the best value. Children who dislike fish can eat chicken, grilled meat or pasta. Ask about portion size, since many dishes are made to share.
Plan it
- Best time
- June and September give warm weather with lighter crowds. July and August are the hottest and busiest. The Atlantic stays cool all year, and the east coast water is the warmest.
- How long
- A week lets you pick one base and explore the coast around it. Ten days allows a move between the central coast and Tavira.
- Getting around
- A rental car makes the coast far easier, since beaches are spread out and public transport is limited. Faro airport is the main arrival point, and Lagos and Tavira are walkable once there.
Good to know
- Pick your base by beach type: Lagos for cliffs, Tavira for calm shallow water.
- Pack water shoes for rocky coves and rock-pool exploring.
- Check the sea state and wind each morning, since conditions change quickly on the Atlantic.
Frequently asked
Is the Algarve cheaper than the Greek islands? +
Yes, for most families in summer. Accommodation, car hire and restaurant meals usually cost noticeably less than on popular Greek islands, though flights from North America are often longer and more expensive.
Is the Atlantic in the Algarve warm enough to swim? +
In summer, yes, though it is cooler than the Aegean. The east coast near Tavira is warmest, the central coast is refreshing, and the west coast is cold. Many families find the cooler water pleasant in hot weather.
Which part of the Algarve is best for young children? +
The east, near Tavira, where water is shallower and calmer, and the central coast beaches with gentle sandy entries. Avoid the west coast for paddling, since waves and currents are stronger.
Do you need a car in the Algarve? +
Mostly, yes. Towns such as Lagos and Tavira are walkable, and trains link some of the coast, but the best beaches and coves are spread out. A car gives you flexibility and saves time.
