Algarve · Portugal · What it costs, in plain terms
What a week on the Algarve costs a family of four
A week on the Algarve for a family of four costs far less than a week on a Greek island or the Italian coast, and flights make up more than half of it for a family flying from the US East Coast. Lodging is about a fifth, food about a tenth, the car under a tenth, and boat trips and activities a few percent more.
Where the money goes
- 1
Flights from the US East Coast
Flights are the biggest single line, at more than half of the whole trip. Most routes from the US East Coast connect in Lisbon or another European hub, and then continue south to Faro, or you land in Lisbon and drive about three hours. Prices swing widely by season, with July and August highest and spring or autumn noticeably lower. Four seats means every saving counts. Compare Lisbon and Faro arrivals, and book early for summer dates.
- 2
Six nights in a Lagos family room
Lodging comes to about a fifth of the budget, which is low for a European beach week. A family room or apartment with a pool in Lagos, about ten minutes from the cliffs, is the standard choice. Breakfast is often included, and an apartment with a kitchen reduces food spend. Prices rise steeply in July and August, when a room can cost a third or more above shoulder season. Book early for those weeks.
- 3
Rental car and fuel
The car is under a tenth of the total and is close to essential on the Algarve. The best beaches, coves and viewpoints are spread along the coast, and public transport is thin. Book ahead for summer, and compare the all-in price including insurance and fuel policy. The A22 motorway uses electronic tolls, so ask the rental company about a transponder rather than finding out later. Small cars handle the narrow roads in old towns.
- 4
Food and restaurant meals
Food runs to about a tenth of the budget even when eating out for every meal, which is the best surprise of the week. Fish is cheap relative to northern Europe: grilled sardines, sea bream and cataplana are all common. Lunch specials, usually a plate of the day with a drink, cost less than dinner. Keep the bill low by eating away from the beachfront, sharing large portions and buying breakfast and snacks from supermarkets.
- 5
The total, and what activities add
Add everything together and you have a week that is cheaper than most European beach trips, with flights doing most of the damage. Activities and boat trips add a few percent on top, and they are where you can choose how much to spend. The cliff boat trips and a sea-cave visit are worth paying for, while beaches, walks and old towns cost nothing. Travel insurance and parking are small extras to include in your estimate.
Plan it
- Best time
- May, June and September balance good weather with lower prices. July and August push accommodation and flights up sharply, so a shoulder-season week costs noticeably less.
- How long
- A week is the standard length for a family. Longer stays spread the flight cost over more days and make the trip better value per night.
- Getting around
- A rental car is the practical choice and a small part of the budget. Lagos itself is walkable.
Good to know
- Price a flight into Lisbon against one into Faro, since the cheaper one can pay for the drive.
- Choose a lodging with a kitchen to cut the food line further.
- Look at school-holiday dates, since prices jump around them.
Frequently asked
Is the Algarve expensive for a family holiday? +
Not by European standards. Lodging, food and car hire cost noticeably less than on the Greek islands or the French and Italian coasts. For families flying from North America, flights are the biggest cost by far.
What is the biggest cost of an Algarve trip? +
Flights, which make up more than half of the budget for a family flying from the US East Coast. Lodging is next, then food and the car, with activities the smallest line.
Is it cheaper to eat out or self-cater in the Algarve? +
Eating out is good value, especially at lunch and away from the seafront. Self-catering breakfast and snacks still saves money, so many families mix the two: a supermarket start to the day, then a cheap lunch plate and a simple dinner.
When is the Algarve cheapest? +
Outside July and August. Spring and autumn bring lower prices on flights and lodging, with warm days and open restaurants. Winter is cheapest but cool, and some seasonal businesses close, so check before you book.
