The best time to visit Albania, month by month

The best time to visit Albania is late May to June, when the sea is warm enough to swim, the coast is half empty and rooms cost less than in summer. September is a close second and is the month many Albanians prefer. July and August are hot and crowded, October is quiet and mild, and the coast is best skipped from November to April.

Season by season

  1. 1

Late May to June: the sweet spot

By late May the days are warm, the sea is swimmable for most people, and the beaches around Ksamil, Dhërmi and Sarandë have room to spare. Rooms and rental cars cost less than in the peak weeks, and boat trips and restaurants are open but not queuing. This is also a comfortable time for inland stops such as Berat and Gjirokastër, which turn very hot later in summer. Evenings can still be cool, so pack a light layer. Book the coast a few weeks ahead rather than on arrival.

  2. 2

July and August: hot and busy

The water is at its best, and so are the crowds. Ksamil in particular fills up, and sunbeds and umbrellas at the beach clubs are often taken by late morning. If you come now, book rooms well ahead, arrive at the beach early and plan the middle of the day for shade and a long lunch. Inland towns and Tirana get properly hot, so keep sightseeing for early morning. Prices for accommodation and cars peak in these weeks, and the coastal roads move slowly in the afternoon.

  3. 3

    September: the locals' favorite

September keeps the warm sea that the summer has built up, but the crowds thin once the school holidays end across the region. Rooms are easier to find and cost less than in August, and beach clubs have space again. That makes it the strongest month for value on the coast. Days are still hot enough to swim without a wetsuit or complaint, and evenings are pleasant for a seafront dinner. Most boat trips and restaurants run until the end of the month, though a few begin to close.

  4. 4

    October: shoulder season

October is mild, quiet and a little unpredictable. You can still get sunny days on the coast, and the beaches are close to empty, but the sea cools and showers become more common. Some boat trips stop running and some beach bars and seasonal restaurants shut for the winter, so check before you plan a day around one. It suits families who want sightseeing, food and walking more than swimming. Pair a few coastal days with Berat, Gjirokastër or Tirana, where the weather is easier to manage.

  5. 5

Skip November to April for the coast

From November to April the coast is cool and rainy, many seasonal hotels and restaurants close, and boat trips do not run. Swimming is off the table. The cities carry on, though. Tirana has cafes, museums and a lively food scene all year, and Berat and Gjirokastër are quiet and cheap in winter, with the stone houses looking their best in soft light. Mountain roads can be affected by snow and rain, so if you drive in the north, check conditions first.

Plan it

Best time
Late May to June and September are the best months overall. July and August are the hottest and most crowded. October suits sightseeing, and winter suits cities only.
How long
A week lets you split time between the Ionian coast and one or two historic towns. Add three or four days for Tirana and the interior.
Getting around
A rental car is the easiest way to reach the southern coast, though mountain and coastal roads are winding and slow. Buses and minibuses link the larger towns, and Sarandë has a ferry connection to Corfu.

Good to know

  • Book beach-side rooms in Ksamil early for July and August, but leave September flexible.
  • Carry cash for small beach bars, parking and taxis, as not everywhere takes cards.
  • Check the day's wind and sea conditions before booking a boat trip.

Frequently asked

What is the best month to visit Albania? +

Late May to June, or September. Both give warm swimming weather, open restaurants and boats, and thinner crowds than July and August. September is usually the best value month, and June is the best for cooler sightseeing.

Is Albania too hot in August? +

It is very hot inland and busy on the coast. The sea is perfect, but beaches such as Ksamil fill up and rooms cost the most. Go to the beach early, rest in the afternoon, and book accommodation well ahead.

Can you swim in Albania in October? +

Sometimes. Early October can still have warm sunny days, but the sea is cooling and rain becomes more common. Some boats and beach bars stop running, so treat swimming as a bonus and plan other activities.

Is Albania worth visiting in winter? +

Yes, for the cities. Tirana, Berat and Gjirokastër are quiet and good value in winter, but the beaches are cool and many seasonal places on the coast are closed, so it is not a beach holiday.
