The best time to visit Thailand

The best time to visit Thailand is November to February, when the weather is cooler, drier and sunny across most of the country, and December to February is the best overall for island beaches. March to May is hot, and June to October is green, rainy and cheaper. The two coasts have different rainy seasons, so check the coast first.

Season by season

  1. 1

November to February: the best window

From November to February most of the country has cooler, drier weather and sunshine, with comfortable days for sightseeing in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the Andaman coast. It is also the busiest and most expensive season, with a peak around Christmas and New Year. Book flights, rooms and island ferries early. Nights in the north can be genuinely cold in December and January, so carry a warm layer for mountain trips and early mornings.

  2. 2

    March to May: hot season

March to May is very hot. Bangkok and the inland areas often reach the high thirties or beyond, which is tiring for children, and the beaches are the sensible choice. In the north, farmers burn fields from February to April, and smoke can make air quality poor around Chiang Mai, so avoid it then. Songkran, the water festival in mid-April, is fun but chaotic. Plan sightseeing early and rest in the middle of the day.

  3. 3

June to October: green and rainy

June to October is the rainy season. The landscape is green, prices are lower and crowds are smaller, and rain often comes in short, heavy downpours instead of all day. September and October are the wettest in many areas, and Bangkok can flood in places. Andaman beaches can have rough seas, so swimming is limited and some boats stop running. This is a reasonable time for cultural travel in the north and in Bangkok.

  4. 4

    The two coasts differ

Thailand has two sides. The Andaman coast to the west, including Phuket, Krabi and Phi Phi, is at its best from about November to April and wet from May to October. The Gulf coast to the east, including Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, is drier for longer, with its heaviest rain from about October to December. The result is that Gulf beaches can be good when the west is wet. Match the coast to the month before booking.

  5. 5

    Best overall: December to February

December to February is the best overall because most of the country is comfortable at once, from northern hills to Bangkok to the Andaman beaches. Sunshine is reliable, the sea is calm on the west coast, and the weather suits children. The trade-off is crowds and high prices, especially in the last week of December. If you can, go in early December or in late January or February, to avoid peak holiday rates and keep the same weather.

Plan it

Best time
November to February for dry weather nearly everywhere, with December to February the best for islands. Gulf islands stay good into spring and summer, and Andaman beaches from November to April.
How long
Ten days to two weeks allows Bangkok, one northern or cultural stop and one beach region, without frequent moves.
Getting around
Domestic flights are cheap and quick for long distances. Trains and buses cover main routes, and ferries link islands. In cities, use ride-hailing apps and the BTS and MRT in Bangkok.

Good to know

  • Book Christmas and New Year rooms and ferries early. Island accommodation and transfers sell out.
  • Check air quality in the north from February to April before choosing Chiang Mai.
  • Pack a light rain jacket in the green season. Downpours are short but heavy.

Frequently asked

December and January are the best months for dry, comfortable weather across most of the country and the Andaman coast. They are also the busiest. February is similar, with slightly higher heat and fewer people.

Is Thailand worth visiting in the rainy season? +

Yes, for the right plan. Rain often comes in short downpours, crowds are smaller and prices are lower. Some Andaman beach areas have rough seas, so choose the Gulf coast, Bangkok or the north for good weather.

When is the best time to visit Phuket? +

November to April, when the Andaman coast is dry, sunny and calm. May to October is rainy, with rough seas and red flags on many beaches. Peak season is December to February.

When is the best time to visit Koh Samui? +

Samui's weather is best from about January to August, drier than the west coast for much of the year. Its wettest months are usually October to December. This makes it a good alternative when Phuket is rainy.
