Santorini: your sign to go, and when to do it
If Santorini has been on your list for years, the way to do it well is to go in May, June or September, stay on the caldera rim in Imerovigli or Firostefani, and plan your days around the cruise-ship hours. Two or three nights is enough. The view is the point, and it is the same view from a quieter village as from Oia.
The places in this film
- 1
Pick the shoulder months
May, June and September have warm sea, open restaurants and far fewer people than high summer.
- 2
Stay on the rim
A room facing the caldera turns every breakfast and sunset into the reason you came. Imerovigli is the highest and calmest village.
- 3
Walk Fira to Oia
The path along the cliff edge takes about three hours and passes every view in the film. Start early, before the heat.
- 4
Get on the water
A boat trip around the caldera shows the cliffs from below and stops at the hot springs and the volcano.
Plan it
- Best time
- May, June, September and early October.
- How long
- Two or three nights, usually paired with a second, quieter island such as Naxos or Paros.
- Getting around
- Ferries and flights arrive from Athens. On the island, buses run from Fira, and the caldera villages are linked by a walking path.
Good to know
- Book caldera-view rooms months ahead for summer.
- Oia is calmest before nine in the morning.
- Pair it with Naxos or Paros for beaches and lower prices.
Frequently asked
Is Santorini worth it? +
For the caldera view, yes. Nothing else in Greece looks like it. It is also the busiest and most expensive of the islands, so it works best as a short stay in the shoulder months, combined with a quieter island.
How many days do you need in Santorini? +
Two or three nights. That covers the caldera walk, a boat trip, a sunset or two and one beach or winery afternoon. Longer stays suit people who mostly want the hotel terrace.
What is the best month to visit Santorini? +
Late May, June and September. The weather is warm and settled, the sea is swimmable, and the island is noticeably less crowded than in July and August.
