5 things to do in Maui with kids

The five best things to do in Maui with kids are playing on the calm beaches of the south and west, driving the Road to Hana, watching sunrise from Haleakala, snorkelling with sea turtles and exploring the lava-rock coast. Two of them, Hana and the summit, need advance planning, so reserve those first and fit the rest around them.

What to do, in order

  1. 1

    Play on the beaches

South Maui has the calmest water for children, with Kamaole Beach Parks I, II and III in Kihei offering lifeguards, shade, showers and gentle shorebreak. Wailea's beaches are wide and clean. West Maui, around Kaanapali, has long sandy beaches too, though the area is still recovering from the 2023 Lahaina wildfire, so check current access and be respectful. In winter the north shore has big surf, so always read the safety signs and ask the lifeguard before swimming.

  2. 2

    Drive the Road to Hana

The Road to Hana is a winding coastal highway with hundreds of curves and dozens of one-lane bridges, passing waterfalls, rainforest and sea cliffs. Treat it as a full day. Leave early from Pa'ia, fill the fuel tank first and pick only a few stops, because children tire of long drives. Waianapanapa State Park, with its black sand beach, requires an advance reservation for out-of-state visitors. If your children are prone to car sickness, bring medicine and consider a guided van tour.

  3. 3

    Watch sunrise on Haleakala

Haleakala is a huge dormant volcano whose summit is above 10,000 feet. At sunrise, clouds spread below you and the crater glows orange. Entry during the sunrise hours requires an advance reservation made online, and slots go quickly, so book as soon as they are released. It is very cold and windy at the top, so bring jackets, hats and blankets for everyone. The altitude can affect children, so keep an eye on them. Sunset or stargazing is an easier option for young children.

  4. 4

    Snorkel with sea turtles

Green sea turtles, known locally as honu, are common along Maui's south and west shores. Many families see them at Turtle Town near Maluaka Beach, or on a morning boat trip. Hawaiian law protects the turtles, so never touch them and keep a respectful distance. Go early, when the water is calmest and the visibility is best, and choose a snorkel mask that fits your child well. Hawaii bans sunscreens with certain reef-harming chemicals, so buy mineral sunscreen or wear a rash guard instead.

  5. 5

    Explore the coast

Maui's coastline is a mix of black lava rock, golden beaches and turquoise water. Easy walks include the Kapalua Coastal Trail on the northwest side, which links several beaches, and Makena State Park, also known as Big Beach, with a long sand shore. Stay back from the edge of lava rock, as waves can be sudden, and avoid blowholes and cliff jumping unless a local guide recommends it. Wear sandals with a strap for sharp rock, and bring plenty of water.

Plan it

Best time
April to May and September to early November have good weather and lower prices. December to March is whale-watching season, with humpbacks peaking in January to March, but it is busier and wetter. Summer is calmer on the south shore and busy with families.
How long
A week is a good length. That gives you a day for Hana, a morning for Haleakala and several beach days. Five days is possible but rushed.
Getting around
A rental car is essential on Maui, as public transport is limited. Book it well ahead for holidays, and ask for child seats. Parking at popular beaches and trailheads can be limited.

Good to know

  • Reserve Haleakala sunrise and Waianapanapa before you book flights if those are priorities, as slots are limited.
  • Pack reef-safe mineral sunscreen, rash guards and water shoes for everyone.
  • Stay in Wailea or Kihei for calm beaches, or Kaanapali for a classic resort area, depending on your budget and priorities.
