Cheap Greek islands? Crete vs Albania compared
Crete is one of the better-value islands in Greece, but Albania's southern coast is cheaper again, often around half the price for rooms and meals. Elafonissi in Crete has pink-tinted sand and calm spring months, while Ksamil in Albania has clear Ionian water and small islets. Both are best in May, June or September, before and after the August peak.
How they compare
- 1
Crete: the cheapest big Greek island
Crete is Greece's largest island, with its own airports, long beaches, mountain villages and ancient sites such as Knossos. It tends to be better value than the Cyclades because competition is high and there is a wide range of apartments and family rooms. Prices fall noticeably outside July and August, and the island is large enough to absorb crowds. Hire a car, since public transport between beaches is limited. Base yourself in the west around Chania or in the north near Heraklion, and book summer rentals well ahead.
- 2
Elafonissi: the pink-sand beach
Elafonissi is in the south-west of Crete, a shallow lagoon with a sandbar leading to a small island, and sand that has a pink tint from crushed shells. The water is warm and gentle, which suits young children. It is also one of the busiest beaches on the island in July and August, with parked cars lining the road and little shade. March to May and September to October are calm and much more pleasant. The drive from Chania takes about an hour and a half on winding roads, so go early.

Now look at Albania
Albania's southern coast faces the Ionian Sea and has Mediterranean beaches similar to those of nearby Greece, with rocky coves, olive hills and clear water. It has been developing for tourism only recently, so prices for rooms, meals and rentals are generally lower than in Greece, often about half. Facilities are less polished, roads vary and some beaches are crowded in August. The cheapest way in is by flying to Tirana or by ferry from Corfu to Sarande. Check recent traveller reviews before booking.

Ksamil: the same beaches, for less
Ksamil is a small resort town in the far south of Albania, close to the Greek border and the ancient site of Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is known for small islets just off the shore, which can be reached by swimming or by hiring a small boat, and for water in several shades of green and blue. The beach is busy in peak summer and some sections are privately run with sunbeds. Visit in June or September for calmer conditions and lower prices, and check what is included before you pay for a sunbed.

Comparing the two over ten days
For a family of four spending ten days, Albania is likely to cost noticeably less than Crete, in many cases around half, mainly because rooms and restaurants are cheaper. Flights and car hire can narrow the difference, so compare totals rather than nightly rates. Crete offers easier logistics, better infrastructure and a wider choice of family-friendly stays. Albania gives you value and fewer visitors on some stretches. If this is a first family trip, Crete is the lower-risk option, and Albania suits a flexible, adventurous plan.
Plan it
- Best time
- Late May, June and September are warm, calm and cheaper on both coasts. July and August are hottest and busiest, with higher prices. In Crete, March to May is good for walking and quiet beaches, though the sea is still cool.
- How long
- Ten days works for either one. A week in Crete or a week on Albania's southern coast also works. Combining both adds flights or long transfers, so it suits longer trips only.
- Getting around
- In Crete, hire a car; roads between coasts are winding but well used. In southern Albania a car also helps, and the coast road between Sarande and Ksamil is short. Ferries connect Corfu with Sarande, so you can add Albania as a day trip.
Good to know
- Compare the full trip, not nightly rates: flights, car hire and transfers can change which option is cheaper.
- Reserve rental cars and family apartments early for summer. Both destinations fill up.
- In Albania, check the sea and road conditions locally and carry some cash, as card use varies.
