Cappadocia
Fairy chimneys, cave homes and a sky full of balloons.
Why it looks like this
- Ancient volcanoes buried the region in ash that hardened into soft rock (tuff); wind and rain carved it into towers, often with a harder cap stone on top.
- Because the rock is soft, people carved homes, storerooms and pigeon houses straight into the cliffs; some are now cave hotels.
- Early Christians cut churches into the rock and painted them with frescoes. The Göreme Open-Air Museum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
How to actually go
- Balloons only fly in calm weather, so plan at least two sunrise mornings.
- Göreme and Uçhisar are the easiest bases; many guesthouses are carved into the rock.
- Walk the Rose and Love valleys at golden hour for the chimneys without crowds.
Best time: April to June and September to October for calm, mild mornings.
